Alexander Stoklosa, with MOTORTREND, wroteThe newest generation Nissan Pathfinder has waded amid its midsize three-row SUV competition in relative obscurity since its debut for 2022, delivering a family-friendly package nearly devoid of sizzle. Can this usefully shaped SUV, with its great big rear door openings, easy-tilting/folding second-row seats (even with a car seat installed!), and comfortable ride be improved upon with a little zest? Nissan thinks carrying over the tougher-looking, more off-road-capable Pathfinder Rock Creek from the last-gen lineup is just the thing to inject a little life into a people mover known generations ago as a proper off-roader. Rock Creek models sit 0.63 inch higher off the ground and utilize a softer, more off-road-tuned suspension setup than regular Pathfinders. Nissan also fits wider 265-60R18 Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires with an aggressive tread pattern and an appropriately beefy look, mounted on 18-inch black and silver beadlock-style wheels. A tubular roof rack makes the Rock Creek several inches taller than its less rocky siblings and can hold up to 220 pounds of gear. There is also a new grille with a trio of nostril-like openings, as well as more lower-body plastic cladding. On the useful side, Rock Creek gets a power bump over regular Pathfinders. Its 3.5-liter V-6 is shared with those models, but here Nissan has re-tuned it to run on premium fuel, pushing its numbers from 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque to 295 hp and 270 lb-ft. All-wheel drive is standard, as is the same nine-speed, ZF-sourced automatic transmission used by other Pathfinders. None of the Rock Creek upgrades alters the Pathfinders pros and cons. The large rear door openings continue to be a boon for entering or exiting the third-row seats enabling owners to make quick use of the third-row chairs you know, the entire point of one of these three-row jobs not to mention loading a car seat into the second-row captains chairs.
